When the weather starts to cool down, my favorite thing is catching my dogs out on the balcony soaking up the morning sun. I can’t tell you how many doofusy pictures I have of them just totally knocked out like they came home from a 24 hour shift. utterly exhausted. To be a dog… But that’s honestly what made me start putting more effort into making the space feel cozier for fall. If even the dogs wants to hang out there, I should spruce it up a bit so I can hang out there with them too!
TIPS FOR CREATING A COZY BALCONY FOR FALL
1. LAYER LIKE YOU WOULD YOUR LIVING ROOM
Textiles are the quickest fix. Start with an outdoor rug so your feet are not hitting cold concrete. Add a couple of cushions and a throw you can actually wrap yourself in when the air gets crisp. Wool, fleece, chunky knit, anything with some weight to it. Basically treat it the same way you would style your couch. If it looks comfortable enough to curl up on, you are on the right track. And if you want it to feel like fall, stick with deeper tones. Burnt orange, warm brown, a moody burgundy. It sets the whole mood before you even add anything else.
2. GET THE LIGHTING LOW AND WARM
Warm toned bulbs actually trick your brain into feeling more relaxed, which is why string lights work so well on a balcony. Drape them along the railing, wrap them around a plant stand, zigzag them overhead if you have a ceiling, or line them along the wall behind your seating area. Some of the best balcony setups are really just things that got moved from one room to another. It saves money and it ends up looking more like you than anything you could buy in a set.
6. GIVE YOURSELF A REASON TO SIT DOWN (AND YOUR FURBABY)
A small side table for your coffee or a basket to toss a book into can be the difference between actually using your balcony and just admiring it through the door. A little speaker tucked in a corner is nice too if you like having background music while you are out there. And do not forget your furry friend. A blanket or a small bed (let’s be real, we know they’ll hop on the cushions and stink it up but we tolerate it!) in the corner and they will probably beat you outside every morning.
